infoDev Advises European Commission on Business Incubation in the Caribbean

infoDev and the European Commission work together to establish the first incubators for ICT-enabled entrepreneurship in the Caribbean

To support the European Commission, infoDev is conducting stakeholder workshops, carrying out a needs assessment, and designing appropriate business models relevant to small island states.

St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines have recently embarked on efforts to diversify their economies away from a heavy reliance on export crops towards creating new opportunities for ICT-enabled entrepreneurship.

The European Commission is now working with these island states to establish three business incubators to help nurture and enable aspiring ICT entrepreneurs. In the process, infoDev is working closely with the European Commission to conduct stakeholder workshops, carry out a needs assessment, and design appropriate business models relevant to small island states.

The experience in designing these incubators is also being leveraged to develop a toolkit on ICT-enabled entrepreneurship for small island states, expected to be completed in November 2006.

To provide support to the European Commission infoDev leveraged its knowledge and experience gained from supporting the Global Incubator Network, an initiative launched in 2002 to strengthen ICT-enabled entrepreneurship in the developing world.  This Network now encompasses more than 60 institutions across the developing world, as well as Regional Networks in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe & Central Asia, Latin America & the Caribbean, and Middle East & North Africa.
