Economic growth and social wealth in the Eastern European and Central Asian region increasingly depends on the ability of countries in the region to foster economic and social development and innovation in small and medium sized towns (SMESTOs) and rural areas. The "Advancing Innovation in ECA 2008" conference is aiming to address the issue of innovation development in small and medium sized towns (SMESTOs) and rural areas from the perspective of business incubators and business development services, as well as policy-makers, the education and science sector and the business and finance community. The conference is being jointly organized by the ECAbit Network of Business Incubators and Technology Parks of Eastern Europe and Central Asia and the Tambov Innovation Business Incubator and will be held in Tambov (Russia) on October 9-11, 2008. It is supported by the Information for Development Program (infoDev) of the World Bank, the Ministry for Economic Development of the Russian Federation, the Tambov regional government, VTB24 Bank and other partners.
The conference aims to promote knowledge exchange on using business incubation as a tool for supporting local innovation and entrepreneurship in Eastern Europe and Central Asia (ECA). The conference will bring together around 80 experts and stakeholders from around the ECA region to exchange knowledge and ideas on policies fostering commercial and social innovation in small and medium sized towns and rural areas, on the role of business incubators and technology parks as drivers of such innovation development policies, of financing mechanisms for innovation in small and medium sized towns and rural areas, as well as of ICT-enabled mechanisms to foster innovation and collaboration in small and medium sized towns and rural areas.
As a part of the event, the ECAbit network will conduct its annual network meeting including training programs aiming to enhance the planning and management skills of business incubator managers in the region. Non-ECAbit incubators are invited to join the network meeting.
